Somatic Movement Education is gentle and effective movement that can help you to eliminate chronic pain, for the long-term.
It teaches you body-mind awareness-
how to sense and feel from within- so that you can orientate towards pathways of movement that feel good and relieve pain. Unlike many other therapies, it goes to the root source of most pain- which is chronic neuromuscular tension, caused by stress, and teaches you how to unwind it.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
SME understands the cause of most pain to be stress related. Whether this stress is caused by your posture, e.g by sitting down alot, or from habitual strains, or from psychological causes- stress creates a whole body, neuromuscular response ( think of how a caterpillar if touched will " contract to protect", or the fight/ flight response which makes our muscles tense in preparation for action.)
Our body has similar ancient evolutionary responses to stress, which in the long term if untreated will lead to chronic tensions and pain. This is why many approaches such as massage only work in the short term, because they don't address the deeper underlying nervous system responses. By accessing your inner body-mind responses, you can transform them, with support from your teacher.
SME works with the whole body and your mind, to help to unwind these tensions at their source, and teach you how to avoid the pitfalls in future. It empowers you to care for yourself, and also helps you to re-connect with a deep trust in your body, and even to find pleasure and ease in your movement once again.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A SESSION?
Each session includes a mixture of deep relaxation, gentle, somatic movements specifically designed to unwind muscular tensions, and Yoga, the ancient art of mindfulness in movement.
As the weeks progress, you will build up a store of movements that are specifically beneficial to your body, so that you can apply this movement medicine any time that you need.
Also included is guided self reflection time and facilitated dialogue, to help you to bring awareness in body and mind, so that you can cultivate new patterns of being. This can lead to greater ease and joy in your movement, and a wonderful improvement in muscles, mind and mood.

IN MORE DETAIL
As an inside out approach, SME teaches you how to connect your movement and your mind, and more specifically, your muscles with your nervous system. At the root of much pain is chronic, held tension- your body's reflex responses to stress ( think for example how we can "contract to protect",) . A vast array of factors, including our physical and emotional environment, the way we react to stress, our personality, the injuries we sustain, our under or overuse of our bodies, all contribute to the combination of muscular habits we develop. These over time become habitual postural patterns which over- use some muscle groups while under using others. Within Somatic Movement Education, this is called " Sensory Motor Amnesia", a state by which we can forget the balanced functioning of our muscles and movement. This is when pain sets in.
This differs from having someone manipulate your body from the outside, or from movement done mechanically. In engaging full body-mind awareness, therefore the brain and nervous system too, we can go to the root causes of muscular pain much more easily and effectively. The practical, gentle neuromuscular approach offered here, teaches how to release subconsciously held tensions by making them conscious. This leading edge healthcare practice hands over the expertise to you, so that eventually you will have the skills to self care and relieve pain, without having to rely on medication or a physical therapist.
The aim, therefore, is not only to help you to discover how a pain-free life is possible, but to educate and empower you, so that you know how to self-care.
